Points of Change

The 'P of C' is a list of changes that need to be implemented by the Department of Child and Family Services for the improvement of the adoption process.  On February 29th, this document was given to Pat Page, Director of DCFS.  Others attending the meeting were: Steve Jones, Deputy Director of DHS; Julie Munsell, DHS Communications Director; Representative Ray Kidd, Representative Paul Bookout, Representative Joan Cash, Melissa Singleton OCC, representatives of KAIT8 News,  and various DCFS staff.

ADOPTION  COALITION

                     Minutes of April 6, 2008 Meeting                       

 

Area VIII Adoption Coalition met at St. Bernards Auditiorium, Jonesboro, AR with 44 in attendance.

After the opening prayer, Sharon Stallings brought everyone up to date regarding the February 29th meeting with DCFS personnel from Little Rock.  An explanation was given regarding the Points of Change suggestions presented to Pat Page at that meeting.  The meeting was attended by some interested state legislators, representatives of  KAIT8 News, a delegation of  DHS Little Rock staff and Area VIII Coalition leaders.

State’s foster children could use more help

The state is not doing all it can to find permanent homes for children in foster care, according to a study released this week.

An increasing number leave the system at age 18 without ever having been permanently adopted. They often don’t complete high school and face increased risks of becoming young parents, being homeless and criminal activities, according to the study, “Finding a Family for a Lifetime: Aging Out of the Foster Care System,” by the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families.

Ark. Foster Kids "Aging Out" And On Their Own


 

Many foster kids turn 18 without ever finding a permanent home, and that can have devastating consequences. The term being used is "aging out" of the system, and every year hundreds of kids leave the care of the state to tackle life on their own. At least one advocacy group fears many aren't prepared.
